On Monday we attended an opening ceremony in our partner school Clara Schumann Gymnasium where we were welcomed by the students, teachers, the headmaster Christian Mengen and the Mayor of Viersen Sabine Anemueller who gave a speech. Then we went to see the town’s sights and came back to take part in a sports activity in the school gym. It was a great day!
On Tuesday we went on a guided tour of the German Mining Museum in Bochun as we are dealing with energy sources during this mobility. We could go underground in a shaft simulator to see what it was and is like to be a miner and we were shown the equipment used in the mines in the past and nowadays. Next we visited Villa Hügel in Essen, the former residence of the Krupp family and a part of the cultural heritage of the industrial revolution. What a day it was!
Wednesday was a day when we visited the Research Centre in Jülich where we listened to a presentation about hydrogen being a source of clean energy and the research being done on it in the centre. It was a great chance for us to extend our knowledge on the topic of alternative energy sources and do experiments producing energy with the use of water and sunlight. The next step was a visit to Energeticon where we saw an old working coalmine and, above all, the exhibition on solar and wind energy. There was lots of scientific equipment which our students could have fun trying out and learn a great deal at the same time.
Thursday morning was very informative and inspiring as we listened to a debate between reperesentatives of three different political parties on the topic of energy sources. The speakers were:
Dr. Morten Endrikat - representative of the Liberal Party,
Guido Görtz - representative of the Christian Democratic Party, member of the regional government coalition,
Maja Roth-Schmidt - representative of the Green Party from Viersen Town Council.
The speakers presented their parties’ policies on clean energy sources and answered a lot of questions asked by the students attending the debate. After that the students sat down together and started working on articles in their mother tongues and in English for the local media in Germany and Poland as well as for the project Facebook website.
On the last day of our first mobility we visited the opencast mine in Garzweiler near Jülich. The exploitation hollow is about 48 square metres big. Next to it we could see lots of wind turbines and a coal power plant. After that we went to visit the border triangle of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and took a picture standing on the territory of three different countries at the same time. The last but one stage of the trip was a guided tour of the cathedral in Aachen, the city of Charles the Great. In the end we attended a certificate ceremony. A big thank you to our German partners for educating and entertaining us all week long???? see you again soon!
